Open FRITZ!Box through 192.168.178.1

Many FRITZ!Box models use 192.168.178.1 as their local IPv4 address with factory settings. The interface is not on the public internet: it responds only while your device is connected to the FRITZ!Box or its home network.

  1. Connect your computer or phone to FRITZ!Box by Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  2. Open Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge or another browser.
  3. Type http://192.168.178.1 directly in the address bar.
  4. Press Enter or tap Go.
  5. Enter your configured FRITZ!Box password.

Important: Do not search the address on Google. A search result is not the local FRITZ!Box interface.

192.168.178.1 or fritz.box: what is the difference?

fritz.box is the FRITZ!Box’s local name. 192.168.178.1 is the factory IPv4 address of many models. On a normal home network, both lead to the same interface.

Easy to remember and can keep working even if the local IPv4 address was changed.

Useful when the local name does not resolve and FRITZ!Box still uses its factory IP.

What if 192.168.178.1 or fritz.box does not load?

If the browser searches, waits indefinitely or reports that the page cannot be reached, check the local route first.

  • Wrong network: the device is on another Wi-Fi, a hotspot or mobile network.
  • Guest access: FRITZ!Box guest Wi-Fi separates guests from the home network and can block the interface.
  • VPN or security app: traffic is being routed away from the local FRITZ!Box.
  • Changed IP: FRITZ!Box no longer uses 192.168.178.1.
  • Another router: an upstream router is the current default gateway.
  • Typing error: a dot is missing or a letter replaced a number.

Quick test: turn off mobile data, remain on the main Wi-Fi and open http://fritz.box.

Reach FRITZ!Box through the emergency IP 169.254.1.1

If neither fritz.box nor the known local IP works, many FRITZ!Box models can be reached at 169.254.1.1. This address is intended for local troubleshooting.

  1. Connect a computer directly to FRITZ!Box with an Ethernet cable if possible.
  2. Temporarily disconnect other network and VPN connections.
  3. Enter http://169.254.1.1 in the browser address bar.
  4. After opening, check the current local IP configuration under Home Network and Network.

Use the emergency IP only on your own network. If it also fails, review AVM’s official troubleshooting guide before considering a factory reset.

Which password should you use for 192.168.178.1?

FRITZ!Box has no universal login such as admin / admin. Use the personal FRITZ!Box password set during installation. With factory settings, the device password is often printed on the label underneath or behind the FRITZ!Box.

FRITZ!Box password

Protects the interface and may differ from the Wi-Fi password.

Connects devices to Wi-Fi; it is not automatically the interface password.

If you forgot the password, use the recovery option and documentation for your model. Do not try long lists of unrelated default passwords.

Before you reset FRITZ!Box

A factory reset can erase internet and telephony settings, Wi-Fi names, passwords, Mesh assignments, port sharing and other custom settings. It should not be the first response to an interface that does not load.

  • Try fritz.box, 192.168.178.1 and the emergency IP first.
  • Check the main Wi-Fi, Ethernet, guest access, VPN and mobile data.
  • Find the current default gateway.
  • Use password recovery if it was configured.
  • Create a backup before resetting if you can still sign in.

Last resort: reset only when you know how to restore internet access and telephony afterward.
